Garden Classes

Garden Class Descriptions 

All classes will be held in-person this year in our classroom. The classroom is located at 1301 E FIrst Ave. Look for our Classes banner out front.

The Hanging Basket classes will be held out back in the Garden Center, so dress accordingly.

 

February 4th @10am: Chickens 101 Class

Our Chickens 101 will cover all of the basic information to get you and your family started with your new baby chicks!

 

February 11th @10am: Advanced Chickens Class

Starts out with a quick review a Spring Chickens for those who missed that class while expanding on the use of electric fencing, chicken math, composting, egg handling and grading, and how to process a bird.

 

February 18th @10am: Seed Starting 101

We'll cover all the basics starting with decoding the information on a seed packet. Next we'll talk lighting sources, growing mediums, and heat mats. We'll end by planting some seeds and discussing how to care for them from germination through seedling.

 

March 11th @10am: Planting Spring Bulbs

Learn everything you need to know to successfully plant your begonias, dahlias, gladioli, lilies, and freesias! These spring-planted bulbs and tubers will give you gorgeous flowers in the summer. We will cover optimal planting techniques and care.

 

March 11th @11am: How to Grow Fodder for Chickens

 

April 1st @10am: Tree Tapping Class

Learn how to select birch trees, how to collect sap and how to cook the sap for syrup.

 

April 8th @10am: Planting Seed Potatoes Class

Seed potatoes are coming! Learn the basics of planting and growing seed potatoes and how to harvest and store your spuds. The instructor is one of our seed potato growers, so come and learn from the expert.

 

April 22nd @1pm: Design Your Own Shade-Loving Hanging Basket

Get guidance while planting a hanging basket that will brighten up that shady spot in your garden. Choose a kit from two different options, both filled with plants that thrive in the shade.

This class will be held in-person this year. The class will take place out back in our garden center. It will be outside, so please dress accordingly.

April 29th @10am and 11:30am: Design Your Own Sun-Loving Hanging Basket

April 30th @11am: Beyond Compost Class

Compost is wonderful food for your plants, microbes, and garden soil. But it's not the only way to enrich your growing system.

Come learn some other exciting ways to build your humus to enjoy heightened productivity, more workable soil texture, increased drought resistance...and be climate smart. With illustrated stories, we'll romp through biochar, cover crops, and mulching tips & tricks.

 

May 6th @10am: Planting a New Lawn Class

Learn how to plant a lawn in Alaska. Our instructor will show you the best practices when planting a lawn from start to finish in Alaska.

 

May 6th @11am: Tomato 101 Class (tentative)

With over 10,000 ultivars, there is a tomato out there for everyone. We'll learn about the differences between determinate, indetermindate, heirloom, and hybrids and the basics for growing all of them.

 

May 7th @11am: Pre-Emptive Protection from Plant Disease

Oh, oh…the farther into summer, the more sick spots you start to see on green leaves! Yikes! Disease has struck, infecting your tomatoes, roses, perennials.

Get prepared now with a toolbox of effective tactics—that won’t harm your song birds, toddlers, or living soil.

 

May 13th @10am: Planning & PLanting Your Veggie Garden Class

Overwhelmed by seed options? Not sure where to plant what? Planning out a vegetable garden can be a daunting task for even the most seasoned gardener. Join us for guidance on putting the right plants in the right places.

 

May 20th @10am and 11am: Building Your Berry Patch

Harvest a bounty of berries this summer! We'll learn all about raspberries and strawberries in this class including planting, pruning and preparing for winter.

 

May 27th @10am: Container Gardening & Raised Beds (tentative)

Container gardening is a fantastic way to garden while overcoming space and soil issues. Learn how to choose container-friendly plant varieties and grow your own flowers and veggies on your balcony or front steps. 

 

June 3rd @10am: Planting Your Perennials

This basic planting perennials class will cover the differences between growing zones, bloom times, placement and care including which to prune back in the fall.

 

June 3rd @11am: Natural Fertilizers and Pesticides

 

June 10th @1pm: Garden with Kids Class ($25)

Join us on Saturday, June 10th for our kids gardening class! Your kids will learn how to plant a 10 inch annual planter with veggies and flowers. This a great way for your kids to get their hands dirty and get creative!
